Climate change and carbon reduction have become hot topics in recent months. In response, the Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) held an online symposium for the textile industry on June 29, 2021. Academic and industry experts were invited to share their perspectives on carbon emission issues. The event attracted more than 400 participants.

During the seminar, Director General of the BOFT Cynthia Kiang stated, “The European Union (EU) is establishing the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM). In response to this policy, the BOFT met with the European Commission Directorate-General for Trade (DG TRADE) in April this year to exchange views on current plans and possible practices. We will continue to gather information and share it with industries.”

In addition, experts from the Taiwan Research Institute and Industrial Technology Research Institute elaborated on this trend of international carbon reduction and provided advice on management to companies. Textile manufacturers that have committed to sourcing 100% renewable electricity also attended this event and shared their experience.

The BOFT will continue to hold a series of meetings and seminars to assist Taiwanese companies in keeping up with international carbon emission issues, policies, and regulations in other countries, as well as guidance measures provided by the government. More information about upcoming events will be announced on the Green Trade Project Office website.
